Creating a Course in Swarm
How to Set up a Course
To get started, go to Courses in the top left corner and then + New Course. You can then choose between Community learning and Classic course.

- Community Learning
- Students will be able to post homework, ask questions, and review other’s work. This encourages community learning and peer review.
- New lessons will ask for a response – every lesson you add starts with a response prompt turned on. Turn it off on any lesson that doesn't require student participation.
- Classic Course
- Students work through the course at their own pace.
- They can post responses if desired but there are no prompts to do so.
When Does Content Unlock?
Select how you would like to release the content:
- As they progress – This is self-paced and the next lesson unlocks after completion of the last lesson.
- Drip after joining – This is relative and the content will release depending on when enrollment occurred.
- On fixed dates – This is scheduled and content will unlock on a fixed schedule. For example, if the course begins on the 1st of the month, students can join at any time until that date when the content is released. If students join after this date, they will see the previously released content. Please see here for more information on adding modules.
Creating Your Course

To set up a course:
- Add a course name and description.
- Select which section you would like the course to be added to.
- Add a cover image and thumbnail – Upload your own or find a stock image.
Your course will remain in draft until you are ready and have put it live.
For a scheduled course, you will need to add in start dates.

See these articles on how to add modules and add lessons to your course.
